About the course  

The course follows guidance from Public Health England in relation to the training of cervical sample takers and incorporates the competency framework CHS37.  

The course is professionally accredited with the RCGP and on successful completion of all elements students will receive a Certificate of Completion which will enable delegates to take cervical samples. 

Course content 

  • Two full taught days (currently being delivered via Zoom) 
  • A practical element with a final requirement of achieving 20 adequate samples 
  • A colposcopy visit with a reflection of the visit documented  
  • A laboratory visit / or virtual tour  
  • Completion of a skills workbook 
  • A visit by our local external assessor Helen McAlinden for sign off. 

Entry Requirements: 

  • Be a registered nurse or registered nursing associate  
  • Be working in an environment where the objectives of the course can be fulfilled in 6 months 
  • Have a mentor in practice who has had 12 months continual experience following initial cervical sample training 
  • Have a mentor in practice who has taken a minimum of 50 successful cervical samples 
  • Have a mentor in practice who (if appropriate) has attended/completed a cervical screening update in the last 3 years 
  • Have a mentor who is a practicing sample taker  
  • Have a practice who will allow the external assessor* to make a visit to sign the student off after observing a minimum of 3 cervical samples. 

STWTH will provide the external assessor and details once the student has been accepted onto the course.
